Dictation Typed Your Correction Too? Keep Only the Final Version

A speech bubble where an earlier crossed-out shape is gently erased and replaced by one clean final shape, with a clock showing three o'clock nearby

When you correct yourself mid-sentence ("at 3, no, 4"), plain dictation types both versions. YOURIO's Magic · Standard keeps only the final one: it finds the correction words, removes what you took back and keeps what you meant. The rules run on your phone, offline and free. Magic · Enhanced also handles a change of mind said without any correction word.

"Saturday at 10, no, 11"

You're confirming a viewing with a client on WhatsApp while you walk to the car. You say: "See you Saturday at 10, no, 11, at the front gate." That's how people talk. You notice the mistake as you make it and fix it out loud.

Plain dictation types: "See you Saturday at 10 no 11 at the front gate". The client now has to work out which time you meant, and some will turn up at 10. So you stop, put your thumb in the middle of the line, delete "10 no" and check it again. By then typing would have been faster.

It happens with names too: "Send the contract to Kevin, I mean Amy." And with days: "Let's do Thursday, no, Friday." Each one is a small mistake, but it's the kind that makes a client confused about a time or a name.

Why plain dictation can't do this

A dictation engine's job is to write down what it heard, and it does. It can't tell "no" as a correction from "no" as an answer, so it keeps everything. That's the safe choice for a transcript and the wrong one for a message.

The usual workarounds all cost something. You can stop and start again, but that breaks your train of thought. You can say the whole sentence again, but dictation doesn't know the second try replaces the first. You can fix it by hand, which is the typing you were trying to avoid.

How Magic keeps only the final version

YOURIO turns speech into text with your phone's on-device recognizer, and the audio is never saved or sent to YOURIO. Before the text is typed, Magic · Standard looks for correction words, such as "no", "no wait" or "I mean" in English. It lines up the new piece with the piece it replaces and swaps them. The correction words go too.

send the contract to Kevin, I mean Amy, and copy my managerSend the contract to Amy and copy my manager.

This works whether the recognizer wrote the number as "10" or "ten", and whether there's a comma before the correction or not. The same idea is tuned for each language. In Spanish, Magic listens for the Spanish ways of correcting yourself, and in Japanese for じゃなくて.

All of this is done by rules on the phone. It needs no internet, no account and no AI, and there's no word limit. It's also what you get on the keyboard when you haven't picked a cloud AI model at all.

What Magic deliberately leaves alone

A correction rule that's too eager is worse than none, because it would delete things you meant to say. So Magic is careful:

  • Ranges and counts stay. "Bring three or four chairs" and "we had two no-shows" aren't corrections.
  • A plain "no" only swaps numbers and days. To swap a name, use a clear cue like "I mean". "Kevin, no, Amy" may stay as you said it.
  • It doesn't guess your intent. If there's no correction word, the rules don't decide you changed your mind. They leave the sentence alone.

Magic · Enhanced: a change of mind without a correction word

Sometimes you change your mind without saying "no": "Let's book the 7 o'clock table. Actually the kids will be tired, let's make it 6." Magic · Enhanced sends the text (never the audio) to a cloud AI, which keeps your final choice. It can put the reason in brackets so the message still makes sense.

The AI's answer goes through a fact check before it's typed:

  • it may not add numbers, names or a "not" you didn't say;
  • the part you took back must be gone;
  • the final number or name you said must still be there.

If the answer fails, YOURIO types the rule-cleaned version instead. The worst case is a slightly less polished message, never one with a time you didn't say.

Enhanced uses YOURIO AI (sign in; 2,000 free words a week, or YOURIO Pro at US$2.99 a month) or your own API key, with no limit from us.

Honest limits

  • Some corrections still slip through. Swapping one place for another without a clear cue ("the café on Main Street, not the one on Oak") isn't something the rules can line up yet. A one-word stutter ("I I") can also stay.
  • Magic can only fix what the phone heard. If the recognizer mishears the number, Magic keeps the misheard one. Glance at times and names before you send.
  • Enhanced needs a connection and sends text to the cloud AI you chose. Magic · Standard never leaves the phone.

Try it

  1. Install YOURIO (download links are at the end of this article) and download your language in the Speak tab.
  2. Turn on the YOURIO keyboard in your phone's settings.
  3. In any chat, switch to the YOURIO keyboard, turn on Magic and say "tomorrow at 3, no, 4".
  4. For changes of mind without a correction word, sign in or add your own key and switch Magic to Enhanced.

Correcting yourself is only one part of messy speech. Voice typing without the "um" covers fillers and punctuation too. When a thought comes out as one long line, see spoken lists to bullet points. To check later which time you finally agreed on, see what did I promise? If a name keeps coming out wrong, teach your phone the names you use.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make voice typing delete what I corrected?

Use a voice keyboard that understands correction words. With YOURIO's Magic · Standard turned on, saying "at 3, no, 4" types only "at 4". The correction words and the part you took back are removed by rules on your phone, offline and free.

Which correction words does YOURIO understand?

In English, words like "no", "no wait" and "I mean". Each language has its own list, such as 不對 in Chinese and じゃなくて in Japanese. A plain "no" only swaps numbers and days; to swap a name, use a clear cue like "I mean".

Can the AI change the time or name in my message?

No. Every Magic · Enhanced result is checked before it's typed. It may not add numbers, names or negations, and the final time or name you said must be there. If the check fails, YOURIO types the rule-cleaned version instead.

Does self-correction work offline?

Yes. Magic · Standard handles corrections with rules that run on your phone, so it works with no internet once your language is downloaded. Only Magic · Enhanced needs a connection.
