Speak Your Language, Type Another: Voice Typing Tuned for Every Language

A person speaking into a phone as colorful ribbons of speech flow out, turning into abstract script-like shapes that travel to several message bubbles, with a faint globe behind

Yes, you can speak one language and type another. YOURIO is a voice keyboard for your phone: turn on translation in any app, speak English, and Spanish, Japanese or any other language you've downloaded is typed at your cursor. Recognition and translation both run on the phone, so your audio never leaves it. Its Magic cleanup is also tuned separately for 17 languages, so Chinese gets full-width punctuation, Japanese loses its "えーと" and Spanish its "o sea". Voice typing and real-time translation are free with no word limit.

Living in two languages: where it gets stuck

A project manager in Madrid reporting to Chicago, an exchange student in Seoul, a family where the kids text in English and the grandparents answer in Portuguese: they switch languages all day, and the hard part is rarely knowing what to say. It's getting it typed:

  • Writing in your second language is slow. You think the sentence in English, then build it word by word in Spanish. A five-line message takes ten minutes.
  • Translation apps mean switching back and forth. Type, copy, translate, copy again, go back to WhatsApp, paste.
  • Voice typing is tuned for one language. Dictate in Chinese and you get half-width commas and English glued to Chinese characters. Every "um" and "no wait" gets typed too.

Why the usual fixes fall short

Translation apps translate well; the cost is leaving the app you were writing in, for every sentence. Your phone's built-in voice typing recognizes many languages, but it only turns sound into words: it doesn't remove filler words or handle you changing your mind mid-sentence. Cloud AI dictation cleans up well, but usually sends your audio to a server, and its cleanup rules often start from English.

What you need is all three in one place: speak inside the app you're in, get the other language typed directly, and have each language cleaned up the way it's actually written.

How YOURIO does it: speak one language, type another

On the YOURIO keyboard, tap Translate, pick a target language and talk the way you normally would. The translation is typed at your cursor in WhatsApp, Gmail, Notes or any other app.

You sayWhat's typed (target: Spanish)
Let's meet at the office tomorrow at 3 p.m.Nos vemos mañana en la oficina a las 3 de la tarde.
  • You don't pick the source language. The phone detects which language you're speaking.
  • Download the target language first. In the app, go to Voice › Language › Translation language packs, download the language you want to type, and tap it to make it the target. On the keyboard, a short press on the target-language button cycles through your downloaded languages and a long press lists them all.
  • Translation only, or original + translation. Choose "Original + translation" when you want your own words kept next to the translation.
  • With Magic on, filler words and self-corrections are cleaned up before the text is translated.

The full flow for writing email is in Speak English, type Spanish: email a client in a language you write slowly. If you've just moved abroad and need to message your landlord, see messaging your landlord in Spanish on WhatsApp.

Magic, tuned for each language

Every language has its own filler words, ways of correcting yourself and punctuation habits. YOURIO has a language pack for each of its 17 languages, and Magic applies the one for the language you're speaking. A few examples:

LanguageFillers and self-correctionsWriting conventions
English"um", "uh" removed; "at three, no, four" becomes "at four"A spoken list keeps its opening line, ending with a colon ("I need to pick up:")
Spanish"eh", "em" removed; "a las tres, no, a las cuatro" becomes "a las cuatro"Questions and exclamations open with ¿ and ¡
FrenchFillers such as "euh", "ben", "genre"A space before ? ! : ; and times written as 15 h 30
GermanFillers such as "äh", "ähm", "halt"Nouns capitalised; du or Sie kept exactly as you said it
Chinese"嗯", "呃" removed; "三點不對四點" ("three, no, four o'clock") becomes "4 點"Pauses become full-width commas (,); a space between Chinese and English or digits; times, dates and amounts as numerals (3 點半, 46 萬)
Japanese"えーと", "えっと" removed; "3時、じゃなくて4時" becomes "4時"Japanese punctuation (、。), no spaces between words, your politeness level (です/ます or plain) kept
Korean"음" removed; "세 시, 아니 네 시" becomes "네 시"Normal Korean word spacing; 반말 or 존댓말 kept as spoken

Hesitation sounds at the start of a sentence or after a pause, spoken number corrections, and Chinese numerals and spacing are handled by Magic · Standard on your phone, with no internet. The other conventions (Spanish ¿, Japanese punctuation and so on), and judging whether a word like "o sea" or "like" is filler or meaning, are handled by Magic · Enhanced, which is cloud AI and receives text, never audio.

A Chinese sentence with English words in it is still treated as Chinese, and Magic puts a space between the two. Each language's punctuation and spacing rules are explained in why voice typing gets punctuation and spacing wrong.

17 app languages

The app comes in English, 繁體中文, 简体中文, 日本語, 한국어, Español, Français, Português, Deutsch, Italiano, Bahasa Indonesia, Nederlands, Türkçe, Tiếng Việt, Polski, ไทย and Русский, following your phone's language, with Magic tuned for each.

Honest limits

  • Which languages can be recognized depends on your phone. YOURIO uses your phone's on-device speech recognition, so the list differs between phones and system versions. Check the Speak tab to see whether your language can be downloaded.
  • Translation quality is your phone's translation engine. Fine for everyday messages, but it's machine translation: wording can be stiff and sometimes wrong. Have contracts, official letters and anything medical or legal checked before you send them.
  • Mixing two languages in one sentence gives mixed results. Speech is recognized in the language you chose; whether English words inside a Spanish sentence come out right depends on your phone's recognizer. Try your own sentences.
  • On iPhone, keyboard translation uses the system's translation language packs. That needs iOS 26 or later, and the packs have to be downloaded in the YOURIO app first; the keyboard can't download them.
  • Names and jargon get misheard. That's what the personal dictionary is for; Magic never changes names on its own.

Get started in four steps

  4. In any app, switch to the YOURIO keyboard, tap Translate and talk normally.

It works at your desk too: use your phone as the microphone for your Mac or Windows PC, and with translation on, your computer types Spanish. To see exactly where your audio and text go, read Does voice typing upload your voice?

Frequently asked questions

Is there a voice keyboard that lets me speak English and type another language?

Yes. YOURIO is a voice keyboard for your phone. Turn on translation in any app, choose a target language such as Spanish, and speak English: the translation is typed at your cursor. Recognition and translation run on the device, free with no word limit.

Does translation send my voice or text to the cloud?

No. Speech recognition and translation run on your phone, and the recording is never saved or uploaded. Only when you use Magic · Enhanced, Edit or Ask Memory is text, never audio, sent to the cloud AI you chose.

Which languages does YOURIO support?

The app comes in 17 languages, and Magic's cleanup rules are tuned for each of them. Which languages can be recognized depends on your phone's on-device speech recognition, which varies by phone; you can check and download them in the app's Speak tab.

Can I mix two languages in one sentence?

It depends on your phone's recognizer. YOURIO recognizes speech in the speech language you chose, and how well words from another language come through varies from phone to phone, so try a few of your own sentences. Once text is recognized, Magic treats a Chinese sentence with English words as Chinese and adds the spaces between them.
